Information Technology

Kharafi National depends on advanced communication and data processing technologies and its Information Technology Department is vital to the smooth running of the company.

The IT Department was established to implement, monitor and maintain KN’s data network, computer systems, and servers. As the company has expanded and prospered, the use of IT has evolved significantly and the department now offers services and support in the field of information technology to all other departments and to KN’s numerous projects.

The IT Department has been charged with providing high quality information technology services and business solutions to KN divisions. Its vision is that it will provide the best data processing services possible through the effective utilization of both existing and new information technologies.

The IT department’s primary responsibilities are to provide information technology, develop and implement recommended standards for information technology, develop and maintain security policies and systems, and to coordinate the acquisition of information technology by departments and projects.

To achieve these goals the IT Department ensures that its company-wide IT initiatives are directly aligned to the overall mission, strategies and operational needs of Kharafi National. It maintains and develops KN’s information technology infrastructure including networks and internet connections, workgroup and central host servers, corporate databases, helpdesk and information services in Kuwait, the UAE and at site offices throughout the region.

Corporate-wide Enterprise Resource Planning
In order to maximize the efficiency of functional departments within KN, to reduce data processing costs, enhance staff productivity and apply best practices, the IT Department is currently implementing the Oracle’s E-business Suite – Enterprise Resource Planning.

Enterprise Resource Planning is a software solution that provides a single consistent system for the organization-wide capture of data with minimal redundancy. By integrating information across functional areas and by providing a set of tools for monitoring and planning, ERP ensures that progress towards common corporate objectives will be made. Kharafi National’s systems are currently migrating from ATS (Advanced Transactional System) to ERP.

Storage and Backup Solution – MSA 1000 Storage Area Network (SAN) caters to our ever-growing needs for hard disk space and can grow to terabytes of data. The tape loaders with multi drives and 26 slots can backup all KN data thus ensuring no data is lost.

Management Information System Unit

The MIS Unit is mostly involved in:

	studying of the design, implementation, management and use of IT applications;
	undertaking the design, improvement and installation of comprehensive corporate planning and financial management tools; and
	retrieving and formatting information as reports at an appropriate level of detail for a diverse group of system users.

Technical Support Unit

The activities of the TS Unit are mainly concentrated on maintaining the entire computer network setup in Kharafi National. To achieve the most efficient use of the company’s IT assets, the unit operates a centralized control and rental system for computer hardware, software and related peripherals. The unit’s services also include the following:

	Internet – Infrastructure capable of upgrade from existing bandwidth of one Mbps to 10Mbps or more.
	Email – Accessible from around the globe with 24 hour availability guaranteed by the use of clustered exchange enterprise servers.
	FTP Service – Our FTP servers can hand the uploading and downloading of huge files and this service is available upon request.
	File NET – Document and image management services are available and after indexing, scanned or saved documents can be easily retrieved and managed.
	Security and Virus Prevention – Cisco Firewall secures the corporate network from outside hackers. For high availability and load balancing the firewall has a ‘fail over’ license. All servers and client stations are installed with the latest virus scanning software. Intranet is posted with virus updates.
	VoIP and Videoconference – Services available upon request.
	Satellite Connectivity - All branch offices in UAE, Egypt, Iraq (south, central and north) are connected to the corporate head-office in Kuwait for email, VoIP, ERP, server administration, file sharing, etc.
	Frame Relay, Wireless, and DSL connectivity – All remote project sites are connected to the corporate office for email, Internet, ERP, Intranet, etc.
	Network Infrastructure – All the 1500 odd network points in the corporate offices are capable of accepting data speed of 100Mbps, with fibre Backbone
