Another KN Success Story in Wastewater Treatment as Al Etihad Biwater Wastewater Company inaugurates the first Independent Sewage Treatment Plant in UAE.
On the 23rd of January 2012, Al Etihad Biwater Wastewater Company inaugurated Al Saad Wastewater Treatment Plant after the successful completion of thes plant construction and commissioning phases. The inauguration took place under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan - Ruler's Representative in the Eastern Region, and in the presence of officials from governmental organizations and guests from across the region.
Al Saad Plant is one of the two plants that constitute ISTP1 (Independent Sewage Treatment Plant), the first privatization project in the wastewater sector in UAE. ISTP1 is a 25 years concession granted by Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) under which Kharafi National as part of Al Etihad Biwater Waste Water Company is required to build, own and operate two wastewater treatment plants at Al Wathba and Al Saad, and to transfer, at the end of the concession term, the two plants to ADSSC.
Al Saad Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed to treat a maximum capacity of 80,000 m3/day of sewage; today, the flows processed and treated at the Plant are in the range of 70,000 m3/day. The Al Wathba Plant has a maximum capacity of 300,000 m3/day of sewage and is in its final commissioning stage.
The unique model of this plant allows for the biogas generated from the anaerobic digestion process to be re-utilized in the generation of 27% of the energy required for the operation of the plant. This is an environmentally intelligent investment and a unique feature of energy saving in UAE. Additionally, the chlorine used for the disinfection in both plants is generated on site from simple Sodium Chloride (Table Salt), thus reducing the hazards associated with the handling and transport of toxic chlorine gas, another first in the region.
The onsite venue was specifically built for the purpose of the inauguration which included private tours of the site for H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and all the other delegations.
Al Saad project is exemplary in its innovative methods and promotes Kharafi National as a pioneer in environmental and corporate social responsibility while working closely with the public sector to contribute towards a greener future for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The successful completion and commissioning of these two projects will strengthen KN’s position as the regional leader in the wastewater sector and position KN to pursue even larger projects as part of our plan to expand our services across new markets.
A special thanks to all those involved in the realization of this project. The success behind Al Saad is truly a reflection of the dedication and strive for excellence of all the team involved.
